Matthew Beaumont has been a fan of ska, rocksteady and reggae since the age of about six, when he discovered his mum’s stack of Blue Beat singles from the 1960s. The first single he remembers hearing was Millie’s ‘My Boy Lollipop’, and the first single he bought was ‘Pass the Dutchie’, Musical Youth’s cover version of The Mighty Diamonds’ ‘Pass the Kouchie’, which was released in 1982.
His first encounter with dub was when his mum brought home the soundtrack of a film she had seen, Babylon (1980) – he has been haunted by this soundtrack ever since, even though he didn’t get to see the film on the big screen until 2011, when it got a limited rerelease. In his teens he got hooked on various ska/punk crossover bands, from Two Tone outfits like The Specials to more obscure bands like Culture Shock.
Since then, he has spent a lot of time and too much money buying Jamaican music.
